City Đurđevac

At the end of June Podravina town of Đurđevac becomes especially alive. Legend of Picoki becomes a reality. In this outdoor folk theater play, hundreds of statists and horsemen participate in the name of Picok, which each person from Đurđevac proudly wears. Legend has it that the Ulama-bey in the 16th century in an attempt to break the resistance under the Đurđevac Fortress decided to siege and starvation of its inhabitants.

In fact it would succeed if it was not for this clever old woman who suggested to put the last cockerel or in podravian picok into the cannon and fire it at the Turkish camp. Confident that the fort has plenty food, Ulama-beg leaves the battlefield, and the people from Đurđevac have since then become Picoki, as the “curse” of the defeated beg.

The cultivation of traditional customs, rituals, old crafts, legends within the Picokijada event is part of the attractive tourist offer of Đurđevac, so this city has been awarded the title of European Destinations of Excellence 2007/2008. on “Tourism and Local Intangible Heritage“.

In Đurđevac, in the Old Town fortress, visit the city museum where a prominent place has a collection of donations from the Croatian naive art by Ivan Lacković of Croatia. Do not miss Đurđevački sands, a unique natural phenomenon with the remains of sand dunes, known as the Croatian Sahara.

Persistent reforestation of acacia and lower species of trees today the people from Đurđevac managed to tame this place, but still arouse the attention of tourists.
