NP North Velebit

From the tops of Zavižan and Alan there is a magnificent view of the sea and Lika. In the Velebit Botanical Garden you can enjoy the richness of flora and fauna and the variety of plant and vegetable communities, while Štirovača is an area of extremely rich coniferous forests. Lubenovac, a extensive Velebit lawn with numerous remains of old dwellings and drywall, is evidence of the life of people on the mountain, and Premužić’s trail leads through the most beautiful parts of northern Velebit.

Hard-passability forests, steeps, karst valleys, caves and sink, pools and coves, large rock blocks, all that is the Northern Velebit, a magical mountain that has the status of a national park since 1999. In its preserved ecosystem there are bear, wolf, lynx and black eagle.

Almost every trail leads to mountain peaks, and hiking trails and routes are suitable for trekking and hiking, while macadam and partly asphalted trails are ideal for cycling tours.

So far, three pits that are deeper than thousand meters have been discovered in Northern Velebit – Lukina Pit, Slovakia’s Pit and Velebit Pit with an unusual living world, among which lives the leech the most famous endemic species of Velebit.

An economically viable tourist product developed in a protected area, taking care of the needs of local government and visitors, has awarded the Northern Velebit National Park the title of European Destinations of Excellence for 2008/2009. on the topic “Tourism and Protected Areas”.
